What is BYOD wireless? BYOD stands for “Bring Your Own Device”. The District technology staff has made substantial improvements to the District wireless network since August 2017. BYOD is the next step in enhancing digital instruction at FBISD and is being implemented to support Teaching and Learning’s Blended Learning initiative. BYOD wireless is also provided for students to access to instructional resources such as Schoology, Skyward, Gale Online, Houghton-Mifflin Online, Office 365, etc, over secure internet.
Where is wireless available: Wireless is available at all FBISD campuses and support sites.
When is BYOD wireless available: BYOD wireless is available to staff and students 24/7/365 with the exception of scheduled maintenance outages. After Hours BYOD is available to Visitors Monday to Friday 4pm to 10pm and Saturday to Sunday 8am to 10pm. Access for After Hours Visitors ends at 10pm each day and their account expires. Returning After Hours Vistors will need to go through the Self Registration process to gain access again.
When is BYOD wireless support available: Support for BYOD wireless is available during District work hours.
Who can connect: Staff and visitors with login credentials can connect personal devices to the BYOD wireless network. Staff with district-issued devices will connect to the internal wireless system. The correct network being broadcast is FBISD_BYOD. Students can connect to the BYOD network using their FBISD username and password on personal devices. Visitors can request access at campus registration desks and support sites during regular District hours. Visitors can register for access with an email address on the After Hours Self Registration page during off hours (M-F 4pm to 10pm, Sat-Sun 8am to 10pm).
How do I Connect?
Wireless Device Requirements: Wireless has been and continues to be one of the fastest evolving segments of technology over the last fifteen or so years. FBISD has implemented a wireless network based on the latest standard (802.11AX) and will continue to make enhancements for additional functionality and security. For an optimal user experience please refer to the list of suggested devices when making a purchasing decision. This list will be updated periodically to reflect changing wireless and computing standards. Fort Bend ISD is providing the BYOD network for personal devices to connect to, but is not responsible for the operation and support of these devices.
Also good to know:
- Personal “hotspots” and wireless access points are prohibited on FBISD campuses and support sites
- Some devices will not be accepted on the FBISD BYOD network including:
- Gaming devices
- Roku streaming devices
- Amazon Echo
- Google Home
- Amazon Firesticks
- Smart TV’s
- Wireless printers
- Any device without an interface to enter user credentials
