I am so excited to be a teacher at Briargate Elementary! My name is Leslie Young and I will be your child's writing teacher. I have been teaching for many years and bring to the classroom expertise in many areas. I have taught in high school, middle school, and elementary and have found fourth grade to be my favorite level! I pride myself in knowing the most varied current and research based approaches to teaching writing to gifted as well as writing challenged students. My favorite word is YET. When my students start feeling defeated or unable to produce the level of writing I require, I have them put the word "YET" on the back of their sentence. "I can't do that YET!" "I don't know how to do that YET!" To me, YET is the most powerful word in their vocabulary. All I ask them to do is their best and I will help them with the rest.
I have three adult children and four adult neices and nephews that I taught in fourth grade at Kennedy Elementary in Houston ISD. After 14 years in the clessroom, I was promoted to Professional Development in Houston ISD and trained teachers in the art of teaching writing as well as incorporating instructional strategies in their every day lessons. I travelled for eight years after that to California, Louisiana, Mississippi and other states training reading and writing strategies to teachers. After having double hip replacement surgery in 2016, I decided to stay home and do what I truly love and that is teach writing to fourth graders! So, here I am!!!!
I am a graduate of Pepperdine University with a degree in Music Education and Performance. I am a certified Master Reading Teacher as well as 4-8 generalist and 4-8 Reading.
