My name is Janet Whatley and I am originally from New Mexico, however I have now lived in Texas for almost two decades. I married my high school sweetheart 31 years ago, and we have two beautiful, amazing daughters. Recently, our family of four became a family of five when our oldest daughter married a wonderful man whom we are now delighted to call our son (in-law).
I earned my Bachelor of Accountancy from New Mexico State University and enjoyed a career in the corporate world for several years. Once my own children began to reach school age, I felt a calling to teach, so I returned to school and completed a graduate program in Elementary Education at University of New Mexico.
I started my career in Albuquerque, NM then moved to Sugar Land where I taught at Oyster Creek Elementary for 18 years. I joined the Cornerstone team 2 years ago as a 5th grade ELA, Reading, and Social Studies teacher. I love introducing students to great literature and connecting the stories they read with informational text. In my class we will enjoy literature discussions and debates and will experience a love for reading and learning. I believe that education is about the experiences we have both in and out of school, and students can learn much from each other and sharing their experiences. I love partnering with my students' families to make sure my students are successful and happy and I look forward to a great school year in 2019-2020!
