Degrees and Certifications:
M.A. German, University of Florida B.A. English and history, Rice University Certified in secondary German, math, history, and English
I have been at Clements High School since August 1995. I have taught German I-IV/V all that time with the exception of the 2008-2009 school year, when I coordinated the Global Languages (now Studies) Academy. Early on, I also taught some math classes. Before coming to Clements, I taught reading for two years at Cullen Middle School in Houston ISD.
I grew up in the small town of Cameron, Texas, and graduated from Yoe High School. In addition to my majors, English and history, I began learning German at Rice University and spent a semester abroad at the University of Heidelberg in Germany. A year of law school at the University of Texas made it clear that law was not the right profession for me. From there, I followed my heart into teaching.
I sponsor the German Club, the German NHS, the German American Partnership Program (“GAPP,” our exchange with a partner school in Cologne, Germany), and the UIL Social Studies team. I am also the director of the German contest Houstonfest.
In 2000 I was named the Texas High School German Teacher of the Year by the Texas Foreign Language Association, and I was the Clements Teacher of the Year for 2004-05. I received the German Embassy Teacher of Excellence Award in 2013.
In my free time, I like to travel, garden, attend performing-arts events (symphony, opera, choir, theater), watch movies, and follow sports (especially professional tennis and our hometown Astros, Rockets, and Texans). I also have an interest in genealogy - I’m completely of German descent.
I am single. I have two brothers, two nieces, and two nephews who live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
