AVID Program

Program Description

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) prepares students for success in rigorous secondary curriculum. The program restructures the teaching methodology of an entire school to make college preparatory curricula accessible to almost all students. It is an academic, regularly scheduled elective program based on writing as a tool of learning, inquiry method and collaborative grouping. The three main components of the program are academic instruction, tutorial support and motivational activities to guide students into a four-year university.

School Sites:
Currently the AVID program is located on six of our high school campuses: Bush High School, Elkins High School, Hightower High School, Kempner High School, Marshall High School and Willowridge High School.

In addition, Missouri City Middle School is implementation AVID program for grades seven and eight.

Student Eligibility Requirements:
Students are selected for the program based on AVID national recruitment criteria and teacher/counselor recommendation.

Program Outcomes:
Since implementation began in 1999-2000 school year, there have been six graduation classes of AVID seniors (03, 04, 05, 06, 07 and 08). Over 70% of the AVID graduates are attending college. They have been awarded over three million dollars in scholarships and financial assistance. To date, fifteen AVID seniors have been Dell Scholars. Our first group of AVID high school graduates are now graduating from college and beginning to enter workforces as knowledgeable, productive, and contributing members of society. We are proud of each of them and their accomplishments.
