READING SPECIALIST - ELEMENTARY

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Provide leadership to teachers in English/Language Arts and Reading instruction.  Assist teachers in utilizing effective reading practices within the classroom setting.  Assist in coordination of Section 504 referral process and instruction of students with dyslexia.  Provide instructional support and/or direct instruction by Texas law, for students with dyslexia.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s Degree or higher 

• Teacher certification 

• Minimum three years teaching experience in English/Language Arts or Reading such alternatives to the above qualifications as may be appropriate and acceptable 

• Reading Specialist certification and/or specific training in teaching dyslexic students preferred

JOB GOALS:

Work collaboratively with building staff to deliver exemplary reading instruction to all students; coordinate with other involved school personnel in planning and providing joint instruction for the students; provide staff development and coaching to campus personnel on reading issues; provide instructional services to those students who have been identified as in need of dyslexia services; keep accurate and complete records including accommodation plans, student monitoring forms and status reports for identified students as required; act as the liaison to building personnel in interpreting educational policies, procedures and guidelines concerning dyslexic students; assist in evaluating students who have been referred to the dyslexia program for testing and provide periodic evaluation and exit from the dyslexia program; participate with teachers, parent(s), campus administrators and district coordinator in determining qualifications for 504 dyslexia services.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

• 187 days

SALARY RANGE:

• Teacher Pay Grade – Salary according to experience and qualifications
