Alief Alternative Certification Program at Fort
Bend
Participants of this group will be preparing for eligibility to begin teaching in August 2008. The areas of certification for the AACP at Fort Bend are Special Education EC-12, Math 8-12, and Science 8-12. The enrollment in this group will be extremely limited. Only current FBISD employees and applicants who have a background of working with children will be considered.
ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university with a GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale or 2.75 in the last 60 hours (Applicants with degrees from foreign countries must have a course by course evaluation from a Credentials Evaluation Company.)
EC-12 Special Education (Fall 2008 class for special ed is full at this time) - Combined total of 24 semester hours in English, Math, Social Studies and Natural Science with an overall core grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
8-12 Math (Fall 2008 class for math is full at this time) - 24 hours in Math with 12 at the upper level
8-12 Science (Fall 2008 class for science is full at this time) - Combined total of 36 semester hours (9 Biology, 9 Physics, 9 Chemistry, 9 Earth Science)
Passing scores on all sections of the TASP/THEA and a score of 250 or higher on the Reading section.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES
Applications may be picked up in the Fort Bend Human Resources office or downloaded from this link (You need the free Adobe Reader software).
Completed applications should be returned to the Human Resources office and should include:
Two letters of reference
Official university/college transcripts
Criminal history documentation check
TASP/THEA score report
$50 non-refundable application fee (money orders and exact cash accepted)
Once the above academic and application procedures have been met, an interview to determine acceptance into the program will be scheduled.
PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION
University courses (provided by the University of St. Thomas) will be held twice a week from 5:30 PM to 8:45 PM. Classes for this cohort will be held in Alief ISD .
Special Education EC-12 applicants will take Generic Teaching Strategies (EDUC 5300) and Exceptionalities in Children and Youth (EDUC 5320).
Modules of learning aligned to TExES Educator Standards for the Special Education Certification will be scheduled. Classes will be held Saturdays in April and May from 8:00 to 3:00 PM. These classes will be held in Alief ISD.
Pre-intern training for June and July 2008 will be weekdays from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
Support for interns who begin teaching in August 2008 will be continued through out school year 2008-2009 and school year 2009-2010.
Applicants must successfully pass the TExES content section for their certification area in order to be hired as a teacher for school year 2008-2009. Testing dates will be in April and June.
PROGRAM COSTS
Applicants will cover costs for taking TASP/THEA and all TExES tests.
The cost of each University of St. Thomas course is $300 each plus the cost of books. Estimated book costs for each course is $50-$120.
Program cost is $3400. This amount will be payroll deducted for school year 2008-2009. Interns who return to teach in Fort Bend for school year 2009-2010 will receive back $1000 of the initial program costs. Interns who return to teach in Fort Bend a third year will receive back another $1000 of the initial program costs.
