Welcome to First Grade Teachers

Welcome to 1st Grade!

You may ask yourself why first grade teachers tend to teach first grade for years, and years, and years… The answer is simple. We are able to watch kids blossom from dependence to independence and from learning to read to reading to learn. Hopefully, students in first grade will realize that reading is more fun than watching television; they’ll be more excited about tapping into their imaginations through a good book than playing the Wii or watching the Disney Channel. We want all first graders to use writing as a form of self expression. They’ll learn that writing properly and legibly allows for readers to understand their strong messages. As you may know, six and seven year olds have a lot to say! In math, students learn more than just operational skills. They are also taught problem solving skills, number relationship concepts, and are driven to think out of the box. Sharing individual thought processes and understanding why the answer makes sense is as important as knowing the correct answer. First graders learn through exploration, experiments, learning rotations, guided reading, group discussions, book studies, and completing projects. Socially, they practice how to work in partnerships, small groups, whole groups, and, of course, independently. We teachers are here to guide, encourage, and excite students through this important year of educational and emotional growth. If you’d like to learn more about the individual first grade teachers, please read our biographies on the school web page.
