NEW! Gold Performance Commendations
TEA just released the new accountability report and SME received Gold Performance Acknowledgments for Commended Performance in reading, writing, mathematics, AND science. A school must have over 30% of the students scoring above 90% to earn this. Our commended rates: 50% in reading, 56% in math, 47% in writing, and 63% in science. We missed the commended rating for student attendance by a hair's breadth: 96.9% of our white students were in attendance when 97% of each sub-group is the goal. All other groups of students met or exceeded the 97% attendance goal.

Celebrating 25 Years of Excellence!
This August will be 25 years since Sugar Mill Elementary first opened our doors. We will have many activities to celebrate this momentous anniversary. Let's start with a look back to 1984: The principal was William Harris. Counselor Ron Pesek was just starting the career he retired from this May. The very first Teacher of the Year was third grade teacher Linda Marsters, who served as principal here with grand style for many years. Four of the original teachers are still in the district: Coach Ronnie Moyer teaches PE at Drabek Elementary, first grade teacher Marybeth Porter leads our kindergarten team and is our 2009 Teacher of the Year, second grade teacher Beverly Davis is now Mrs. Croucher, principal at Brazos Bend Elementary, and fifth grade teacher Sandy Reina teaches at Pecan Grove Elementary.

Sugar Mill in Top 20% of State
Sugar Mill was identified as one of the High Performing schools in the state, based on our high levels of reading achievement. Just for Kids is an organization that groups similar schools, based on demographics, and then ranks the school within their group. This is an excellent way for Exemplary rated schools like ours to set the standard even higher. While we currently rank in the middle of our group in other subjects, our goal is to reach Highest Performing recognition in mathematics, writing, and science, too.
