Many parents ask me how to get their child excited about reading and keep them that way through later years. Here are a few tips that I offer to motivate children to read and to help them grow to love reading. • Read to your child every day from birth. • Make frequent trips to the public library. • Give books as gifts. • Talk about books. Talk, talk, talk. • Have something to read all around the house: newspapers, magazines, books – materials that your kids want to read. • Make reading a pleasant thing – never a punishment. • Share lots of suggestions for better and better books. • Read what your child/teen is reading and talk, talk, talk. • Maximize access to school and public libraries. Helping your child develop a love for reading is one of the greatest gifts you can give them. Reading is one of those gifts that truly “keeps on giving.” Happy reading!
