Welcome to Fifth Grade

It’s a new school year, and we have so much to learn! We are in the full swing of things, and we’re asking you, the parents, to join us in your child’s learning. Some things you can do to help your child, and us, are:

• Check your child’s agenda each night and ask your Palmer Bear to explain what kinds of activities he/she participated in and how those activities relate to what the learning objectives were.
• Spend time going over your child’s homework to make sure he/she really understood it.
• Correct those low grades that come home in Tuesday Folders and send them back to school.
• Ask your children to read a favorite book to you.
• Start a book club with your child where you both read the same book, at the same pace, and have discussions about the book after each segment. Add a special treat to your “meetings” to make them more exciting.
• Watch a movie after reading the book of the same title, and compare the two.
• Read two different authors’ versions of the same story and compare the texts.
• Take a trip to the library and check out books, then complete some of those Texas Reader’s Club book reports that still need to be completed.
• Write a letter to a friend or family member that your Palmer Bear hasn’t been able to see in a while. Emails count, too!
• Encourage your child to keep a journal of what he/she does each day and how he/she reacts to daily events.
• Practice math flash cards. You can also time your child, and try to beat the previous time each review.
• Create word problems that require your child to use the math knowledge gained so far (fractions, decimals, place value, long division)
• Have your child create word problems for you or a family member to solve, and don’t forget to have them also make an answer key!

We all feel blessed to work with such wonderful children each day and we truly do want the best for each child, but we can’t do it all alone. We thank you for all of the support that you give us and look forward to an even-better second semester of keeping the learning alive!
