Welcome to First Grade

Our fantastic first graders are in store for a wonderful and exciting year! In Language Arts, the students will learn to read fiction and nonfiction books as well as poetry. Students will be working on comprehension and reading fluency skills. Students will be learning to write descriptive as well as narrative stories. Most of all, learning to work independently in literacy work stations. We expect to have wonderful readers and writers by the end of the school year!

In Math, Our super learners will learn to add and subtract facts up to 18. They will use addition and subtraction skills to solve word problems. As well as, learning how to tell time and measure things with nonstandard units. Students will also work on patterning, sorting, and graphing. The students will learn more skills in math such as, place value, greater than and less than, skip counting and having fun in math learning stations.

We will be working with two science kits this year. The science kits are divided by semesters. During the first semester, we will begin our butterfly unit. Students will learn all about the life cycle of a butterfly. During the second semester, we’ll begin the soils unit. The students will observe and compare different types of soils.

In social studies, students will be learning about patriotism and the importance of being a good citizen. Students will learn about historical figures, national symbols and landmarks. Students will also learn about map skills using cardinal directions. Our learners will learn about holidays, customs and traditions that are celebrated in our nation and around the world.
