Welcome Back Lakeview Readers!!

The Lakeview Library is very busy these days! Students are coming in around the clock to take AR quizzes. It has been great to see everyone this year and we want to encourage you to continue to use the library. Here are some helpful hints for parents.

Time spent with your child is always special. Reading together is one of those special times, and the results of this togetherness are truly far-reaching. Here are a few simple tips to help you make the most of reading with your child.

Young Children
• Turn pages, name things, name colors
• Have frequent, short book encounters
• Have some regular times for reading – bedtime, quiet time, when grandma comes
• Repeat favorites

Developing Readers
• Repeat sounds, words, and phrases
• Use favorite books regularly, but introduce new ones also
• Use various types of books to enrich your child’s language development
• Talk about the story

Beginning Readers
• Blend readers – sometimes the child reads, sometimes you
• Encourage expression by questions, phrasing, and vocally mimicking story characters
• Talk about the story – predict what will happen, ask what just happened, ask what they like and don’t like
• Read aloud stories slightly above the child’s reading level to enrich language – talk about words they don’t know

Reading Aloud
• Use expression in your voice – get excited, sad, loving, or angry as the story requires
• Read with fluency so your listener can enjoy your smooth delivery and the beauty of the language
• Act out parts of the story – or have your child act it out
• Remember that it is ok to become emotional. Five handkerchief books are great read-alouds.
• Always make reading aloud time a pleasant experience!
