Fifth Grade Course Outline
Second Nine Weeks
2009
 

English Language Arts
 
• We will continue working on the editing skills of capitalization, punctuation, and spelling patterns. We will focus on expository as well as summarization.
 
Reading
• Comprehension skills and literary elements will be practiced with a wide variety of literature, centers, and activities. Integrating science and social studies vocabulary/concepts. Be sure to read at home nightly. Please check your child’s AR points regularly. Students also need to do book reports for Texas Reader’s Club if a book is not AR.
 
Social Studies
Our area of study will be Settlements and Colonies
• Discuss the geographic and economic factors that influenced patterns of settlement in the US
• Describe the significant accomplishments of colonial leaders
• Compare the early colonial systems of government
• Types of Colonial Settlements
• Colonial Project- More information to come
 
Math
Students will be working on the basic understandings found in number, operations, and quantitative reasoning. We will be covering the following concepts:
- Fractions and Decimals
- Equivalent Fractions
- Comparing and Ordering Fractions with Mixed Numbers
- Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Like Denominators
- Patterns, Expressions and Equations
 

Science
This nine weeks will focus on the areas of:
 
- How living things interact
- Conservation of Ecosystems
- Climate and Weather
- Water Cycle
