Counselor's Corner Welcome back to Lakeview for the 2007-08 school year!! I hope everyone had a super summer and took time to relax, have a lot of fun, and to recharge your batteries for a great year ahead. Teachers and other staff members will be working with parents to help ensure a successful school year for all our students. As we are settling into our new year, establishing good routines right from the beginning is important, both at school and at home. Below are some tips from teachers and administrators of things parents can do at home to help reinforce this practice of getting into a routine: Take time to make time – Follow a schedule. Children need a schedule they can depend on…one that includes definite times for homework, meals, and sleep. Then they can work around those times to include the “extras”. Read, read, read – Continue to share reading with children, even if they can read by themselves. This activity allows them to enjoy stories that may be too difficult for them to read alone. You may also try reading newspapers, magazines, and possibly comic strips to add some variety. You will send the message that reading is important. Show interest – Take a few minutes each day to look at what your child brings home from school. This shows that you care about the things your child spends most of the day doing. Talk about the school work together and point out some of the positives besides just pointing out the errors. These are just a few tips. You may have some ideas of your own. The important thing is that we all want to join together and work hand in hand to ensure school success for our students at Lakeview.
