Membership Drive Our membership drive for 2009-2010 resulted in 225 people becoming members of the Lakeview PTA, with dues and donations amounting to $1,700. It's a great start to our PTA year and we would like to thank you all for your support.
Recess Equipment There's some new recess equipment at the school courtesy of our Playground Property Chair Jana Ross. The fourth and fifth grades have new equipment bags and some rubber footballs were purchased so that every grade has at least one or two (to go with the footballs donated last year by Pam Barnes and her husband. Thanks Pam!). And two new tetherballs have replaced a couple that were on their last legs. Fall Fundraiser Thank you to all who participated in the fall catalogue fundraiser, we managed to achieve our budget expectation of $7,500 (with a little more to spare). The Mad Science Show, for those children who sold 10 items or more, will be held at the school on Monday November 16. There were five $50 gift certificates on offer to the teachers of the classrooms that sold the most items, and those lucky teachers are Mrs Green (Third Grade), Mrs Harris (Kindergarten), Ms Harris (Fourth Grade), Mrs Fields (Fifth Grade) and Ms McCarley (Third Grade). Congratulations teachers. VIPS If you would like to volunteer at Lakeview but haven't had a chance to go on-line and register, you can still do so. It takes about a week for the process to go through FBISD's system, so don't wait any longer! Click here to register. We are looking for volunteers who can go to the Teacher Center to complete projects for teachers as needed. And we need more volunteers in the following areas - Lunch Duty (10:30-11:00) for kindergarten and first grade, VIPS workroom, Fundraisers, and Planting Flowers. If you can help in any way, please contact Aki Nomi. VIPS and PTA volunteered a total of 541.45 hours in September. Thank you volunteers. Every little bit helps. VIPS: Volunteer of the month There are two volunteers who earned the title of Volunteer of the Month for September. They are Leslie DeLeon and Susan Sackett. Leslie and Susan are long time volunteers at Lakeview, always ready and willing to help in a variety of ways. Last month, after the sudden death of Ms Doyle, Leslie and Susan spent a number of hours in the library, assisting Ms Jones, keeping the wheels turning and minimizing disruption to the children. Thank you ladies. Your contribution was much appreciated Red Ribbon Week Lakeview Elementary will celebrate Red Ribbon Week from October 26 – 30, 2009. Our theme this year is “I Am Cool! Drugs Are Not!!!” Each day during this week, an activity is planned that will raise awareness of the importance of staying away from drugs and alcohol. It is important that each family takes this opportunity to continue the dialogue with their children about the importance of staying “Drug-Free”. If you are interested in volunteering to help with some of the activities surrounding Red Ribbon Week, please call Susan Sackett at 281-980-9273. Teacher Hospitality It is a long standing tradition at Lakeview for the PTA to show its appreciation for staff by regularly hosting special events. Already this year the hospitality committee has organized a back to school luncheon and a sandwich snack on open House night (and we thank all of you who generously contributed to those events). This year, we are inviting parents to join the PTA in showing their support for staff by co-sponsoring events. Our first event will be a Halloween themed luncheon on 26 October, to be co-sponsored by third grade. The PTA will supply the entree from Chick Fil-A and third grade parents can donate accompaniments like chips and drinks to fill out the meal. It's sure to be a terrific luncheon! All grades will have their turn to co-sponsor an event during the year, please keep an eye on the take home folder to find out when your child's grade is to be involved. FBISD Website Fort Bend ISD has upgraded their web-site so that it isn't subject to disruption, which means their information is always up to date. It is a useful resource on days when there may be unexpected school closures. And on 22 October, there will be a parent portal for elementary school which will allow parents to view their child's reports, attendance and cafeteria balance online. Visit the Fort Bend web-site for more information. And don't miss the promotional video for the Fort Bend Education Foundation which features a number of familiar Lakeview faces (hello Mrs Mazzeno, the first person on the video). The content is a little dry, but it's fun spotting teachers and kids from our school. Check out the video at http://www.fortbend.k12.tx.us/foundation/video/video.html
Sunny D Promotion Sunny D, the makers of juice, are running a promotion where they will donate 20 books for 20 barcodes. If you purchase Sunny D products please clip and submit your barcodes to the school (one at a time is fine), there is a collection box on the PTA table. And if you have never tried Sunny D products before now is a good time because you can download a "Save 55c" coupon from the web-site, and then submit the barcode of the product you try to the school to support the book-spree. The promotion ends 14 November 2009, and there are some bar-codes that are ineligible (those on the 11.3 oz and 6.75 oz bottles and the 8oz and 12 oz cans). You can find all the information at the Sunny D web-site http://www.sunnyd.com/promotions/index.shtml . Box Tops for Education Keep the box tops coming! A Tribute to Ms Doyle Barbara Doyle started her career at Lakeview as a resource aide. Her love of children and reading made her a wonderful asset for our children and staff. Ms. Doyle moved into her library aide position approximately 13 years ago. She shared her love of books with the students and was always ready to help teachers, parents, and students with book selections. She knew the students by name…what they liked to read…..and was ready to make suggestions to help them earn their AR points. Ms. Doyle loved her children, her grandchildren, her cats…”Sophie and Max”…and above all she loved Lakeview and its students. She will be greatly missed……. Janet Moring
