Welcome to Second Grade

It is hard to believe that we are ready to start a new school year. Second grade will learn so many new concepts, and we would like to take this opportunity to share some of the highlights of our first semester.

Our second graders will read all kinds of fiction and nonfiction books. They will discover how to summarize, make connections, and recognize the author’s message in a variety of stories. They will also understand nonfiction elements to help them to read and understand the information in nonfiction texts. This is particularly important as learners.
 
In math, the students will master addition and subtraction facts through 18. They will also learn more about graphing, counting money, and place values through 999.

In science, the students will explore living organisms with our first science kit. They will be making classroom freshwater aquariums and woodland terrariums. We will have guppies, millipedes, snails and pill bugs to add to this unit. You may even get the chance to adopt guppies.

In social studies, the students will discover the communities they live in, as well as communities that they don’t know. The students will learn to read maps and expand their knowledge of the holidays in this semester.

The students will continue writing in second grade with a strong focus on writing complete sentences. They will learn how to narrow a topic of writing and to edit their own work. You will be amazed at the quality of writing this school year.
