Description

Students at Lexington Creek Elementary are very fortunate to have a large amount of technology available to them. Within their classroom, there 3-4 student computers available, and a teacher computer which is hooked to a television. The teachers use the computer as a teaching tool, as well as for student use. We have a wide variety of instructional software available in the library for teachers to check out for use on their classroom computer(s). AlphaSmart Keyboards are available for the teachers to check out from the library. AlphaSmart keyboards allow students to take a small keyboard to their desks to type on. The AlphaSmart allows students to edit thier work, or they can then download their work to the computer and edit it there. In addition, PTO purchased "The Writers" which are similar to AlphaSmart keyboards, but also teach keyboarding skills and include spelling, writing and vocabulary activities. We have a mobile cart that moves from classroom to classroom.
We now have two computer labs available for our students. The Intermediate Computer Lab has 25 multimedia computers and is mostly utilized by our third through fifth grade students. The Primary Lab has 22 computers and is used by the students in Kindergarten through second grade. The teachers meet with Mrs. Plost at the beginning of each semester to plan computer activities which integrate their curriculum with our technology.
Mrs. Plost is on campus every other week (she is assigned two elementary schools in the district). During the weeks that Mrs. Plost is on campus, she teaches classes in the Computer Lab. It is during those weeks that students are involved in technology projects that integrate the curriculum. Many teachers are learning technology skills right along with their students.
During the weeks that Mrs. Plost is not on our campus, grade levels are assigned to go to the Lab to practice keyboarding. Teachers can also sign up to conduct lessons that they are comfortable with on their own.
Our students are definitely ready for the "aiming for success with technology!"
