Welcome to First Grade

First graders expand on previously learned English Language Arts concepts of print, phonemic awareness and letter/sound correspondences. As they participate in read-alouds and shared reading of a wide variety of genres, they become better listeners and are able to connect their own experiences with what they've heard or read. They also use guided reading and independent reading to improve fluency and understanding. First grade writers can organize their ideas into complete stories and can correctly apply basic grammar and spelling concepts.

Our math focus will be on adding and subtracting whole numbers and organizing and analyzing data. We will also work with measurement concepts to identify and compare attributes of objects and situations, geometric shapes and solids, patterns, and problem solving.

In social studies we will find out how we relate to our classroom, school, community, state, and nation. Through studying about past and present events, we will learn about important historic figures and good citizens of today. We will learn to use and make simple maps. We will study basic economic concepts such as goods and services and the value of work.

In science first graders will be introduced to the scientific method through exploration of life, physical, and earth science concepts. We will complete two hands-on studies about butterflies and soils.
