Welcome to English Language Arts
SEVENTH GRADE: Students will read extensively, including a variety of nonfiction, novels, plays, short stories, and poems. Learn new workds using word-recognition strategies, including Greek and Latin roots and prefixes/suffixes. Use study strategies, such as, preview, question, reread, and record to learn and recall important ideas from both nonfiction and fiction selections. Increase understanding of information by analyzing how it is organized. Read and understand various themes and connections within and across cultures. Analyze and judge an author's use of various literary devices, such as, style tone, mood, foreshadowing, and flashback. Write for a variety of purposes and audiences. Use the writing process to create, revise, edit and finalize written work, including organization, transitions, and elaboration. Use simple, oompound, and complex sentences and avoid run-ons and fragments. Use standard grammar in both speaking and writing. Take notes, summarize from multiple sources, and organize information to present research reports and projects. Listen carefullyu to understand and analyze a speaker,s message, persuasive techniques, and credibility. Speak clearly and support ideas with evidence, elaboration, and examples for varied audiences and purposes. Use technology to interperet, critique, and produce visual images, messages, and products.
