NO STUDENTS WILL BE DISMISSED EARLY AFTER 3:40 PM

Make sure you arrive on campus before 3:4O pm if it is necessary for your student to be released from class.

ABSENCES AND ABSENCE NOTES
Students who are unable to attend school may be excused for a temporary absence resulting from any cause that is approved by district policy. For a complete list of excused absences refer to page 3 of your GMS Supplement to the 2009-2010 Student/Parent Handbook.
When a student is absent from school --the student upon returning to school (no later than the 2nd day of returning from an absence) -- is required to turn a note signed and dated by the parent that describes the reason for the absence to the attendance office. Notes received by the Attendance Office after 2 days will remain UNEXCUSED.
DO NOT TURN IN ABSENCE NOTES TO A CLASSROOM TEACHER!

EARLY DISMISSAL
Students requiring early dismissal from class must be signed out at the attendance office by a parent/guardian or authorized person. Students WILL NOT be released from class to the attendance office until a parent/guardian or authorized person arrives on campus. There will be no exceptions to this procedure. A driver’s license or photo ID will be required when signing a student out at the attendance office.

Only persons authorized in writing by a student’s parent/guardian will be allowed to pick-up a student through the attendance office. If a parent/guardian requires a person who is not listed on a student’s emergency card to pick-up the student before regular dismissal time, the attendance office must be notified in writing. Please include the name of the student and the name of the person who will be picking up the student. The note must be signed and a copy of the parent/guardian’s driver’s license or photo ID is required to be attached

PARENT CONTRIBUTING TO TRUANCY - FAILURE TO ATTEND SCHOOL
The State of Texas Compulsory Attendance law states that if a student is absent from school for 10 or more days or parts of days within a six-month period or three or more days or parts of days within a four-week period and the absences are unexcused, the student is truant. Failure to attend school is a violation of the Texas Education Code, Section 25.094 and continued failure to comply may result in a complaint being filed against the student and the parent/guardian in the Justice of the Peace Court or Municipal Court This offense constitutes a Class C Misdemeanor and both parent and child may be fined up to $500.

PERFECT ATTENDANCE
Attendance in middle school is taken every period. A student must be in attendance every day in each period in order to qualify for Perfect Attendance. Absences that will not be counted against a student for perfect attendance are:

• A medical/dental appointment and the student is in attendance in class a portion of the day. The absence is required to be supported by a note from the health care professional.
• The observation of a religious or holy day and the holiday is recognized as a Religious Holiday. The absence is required to be supported by a note from a parent/guardian or the religions institution.
• A court proceeding that the student is required to attend. The absence is required to be supported by a note from the court.
• Appearing at a governmental office to complete paperwork required in connection with a student’s application for US Citizenship. Travel days shall be limited to 1 day travel to and 1 day travel from the site of the governmental office. The absent is required to be supported by a document from the government or court of law where the appointment was scheduled.
• Appearing at a United States naturalization oath ceremony in connection with a student’s US citizenship.. Travel days shall be limited to 1 day travel to and 1 day travel from the site of the ceremony. The absent is required to be supported by a document from the government or court of law where the ceremony was scheduled.

ATTENDANCE CRITERIA
A student may not be given credit for a class unless the student is in attendance for at least 90% of the days the class is offered as set forth in Texas Education Code, Section 25.092 Minimum Attendance for Class and Fort Bend ISD Policy. Absences, whether excused or unexcused, are considered in determining credit. Students who exceed the maximum number of absences, in one or more classes, allowed under state law are required by Fort Bend ISD Policy to fill out an absence petition and provide any documentation regarding absences. The petition and supporting documentation should be turned into the attendance office. An Attendance Committee will review completed absence petitions and determine whether or not a student’s absences are considered to be in compliance with attendance requirements. The Attendance Committee will also take into consideration a student’s academic standing in determining its findings
