Music

Course Description

At Dulles Elementary we use a Kodály philosophy to teach music.

The Kodály approach is a child developmentally centered approach to teaching music and is based on the philosophy of Zoltan Kodály who believed that music belonged to everyone. The Kodály approach is:

* A singing approach—because the voice is the most natural instrument and one which every person possesses.
* A folk music approach—because folk music is the music of the people and there can be no better material for singing than the songs and games used by children for centuries. It is also the classical music of the people, and, as such, is a perfect bridge leading to-and working hand-in-hand with-art music.
* An approach focused on quality music---because music enhances the quality of life. So that it may have the impact it deserves, only the best music should be used for teaching.
* A developmental approach--In addition to music reading and writing which are begun at an early stage, the following skill areas are also developed: part-singing, part-hearing, improvisation, intonation, listening, memory, phrasing and understanding of form.

Students at Dulles Elementary learn to sing, dance, read, write, improvise, create and perform music in a manner which will allow music to belong to everyone!

* Taken from the Organization of American Kodály Educators’ website

4th and 5th grade students are able to audition for Viking Chorus
