Welcome to FIFTH GRADE

Fifth grade got off to a great start! The students have been working on taking responsibility for themselves, their work, and their actions. They are such a great group of children!
In social studies, we learned the regions and names of each of the 50 states. We also covered different symbols, landmarks, and traditions of the United States. We used geographic tools to identify and locate parts of maps and studied reasons for exploration of the United States.
In math, the students have focused on number sense and basic operations. We studied reading, writing, comparing, and ordering whole numbers and decimals. We practiced reading, creating, and interpreting different types of graphs. We also explored rounding numbers in real life situations.
In science, we demonstrated safe lab practices through science investigations. Using our ecosystems kit, we observed characteristics of plants and animals. We created eco-columns using two liter soda bottles to make a terrarium which connected to an aquarium. We also identified learned and inherited traits of organisms. We studied the ways that organisms adapt to different environments.
In reading, we set up reader’s workshop. We learned about various genres and analyzed characters in novels and picture books. We worked to understand the author’s purpose in writing the text whether it is to inform, persuade, or entertain.
In language, we set up writer’s workshop and made flip books which helped us create a list of seed ideas. We are starting our narratives soon, too. We worked on using correct grammar: subject verb agreement, simple and compound sentences, and verb usage.
We are looking forward to the rest of the year!
