Welcome to SECOND GRADE

In reading, we have been listening to some great read-alouds and learning about the different genres and story elements. We love to share our text-text and text-self connections, and we are getting very good at retelling the stories. We are also learning how to go back to a story and reread for details using new strategies.
In writing, we've had fun learning about where authors get their ideas. Through these authors, we have learned what good writers do. By writing our own stories, we are learning that every writer takes a piece of writing through the writing process: brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. We have been learning how to write complete sentences with nouns, verbs, and adjectives.
In math, we have had fun with Envision. We have enjoyed many different math activities on the Smartboard and have learned strategies to assist with our addition and subtraction facts. We are even writing about math in our math journals. We try to use our math vocabulary and love to invent math story problems.
In social studies, we have studied and have practiced map skills. We also have studied community roles and had fun making and sharing our knowledge of urban, suburban, and rural communities through our class murals.
Finally, in science, we have studied about habitats and are extremely excited to have received our Organisms Kit.
