THIRD GRADE

Course Description

In language arts we are learning to liven up our stories through writer’s workshop. We are putting our hearts into each piece of writing and becoming grammar detectives along the way. The students are being introduced to test-taking strategies to use in all subjects. Your child is learning to connect to different types of literature through shared and guided reading lessons too. When reading at home, be interactive and discuss with your child why characters do what they do, how they feel, and how they can relate to similar events in their own lives. We are helping the students develop a love for reading by exposing them to a variety of genres. Please continue to model what good readers do by having your child read daily. Be sure to read those nonfiction books as well as fiction and don’t forget to look for your child’s DRA scores on the first nine weeks report card.

In math, we are focusing on the mastery of addition and subtraction. The student will soon be working on problem solving, patterns, and graphs. Multiplication is on its way, so be prepared to help your child study their basic facts. Our little scientists have been learning about soil, growing Brassica (Wisconsin fast growing) plants, the process of photosynthesis, and pollination. Our focus in social studies has been communities. The students created timelines, learned about public/private services, and elected/appointed officials within the local government. We will be discussing different cultures within our communities next.
