Welcome to Kindergarten

Welcome to Kindergarten at Colony Bend Elementary! Our theme for the year is “Building Brighter Futures!” It is our goal to instill in your children a life-long love of reading and learning and to ensure long-term academic success! Our program focuses on a Balanced Literacy approach to reading that includes phonemic awareness, language experiences and development, print concepts, and shared and guided reading. We utilize a “Writing Workshop” approach to teach writing which is in alignment with our campus Writing Plan. We will develop many skills in the area of mathematics, including number concepts and operations, problem solving, patterns, geometry concepts, measurement, probability and statistics, and recognizing math in everyday situations. Our Science curriculum provides many hands-on learning experiences where children will learn the scientific method and explore the wonders of science. In addition, we attend weekly Science Labs. We will have two major science kits: Wood and Paper and Ladybugs. In Social Studies, we recognize and celebrate diversity in our community, learn early map concepts, and help our students become good citizens.

Each day in Kindergarten is filled with the excitement of learning. The kindergarten team works closely together to plan and implement the FBISD online curriculum and ensure that we reach each child by teaching the whole child. We look forward to the support and involvement of our parents in this wonderful journey!

There are many ways you can reinforce what is being taught in the classroom:
• Read with your child daily.
• Continually review number recognition and oral counting, letter recognition and sounds, and sight words (writing and reading the words).
• Practice writing names correctly (using the model provided by teachers, i.e. Tom, not TOM).
• Take time to review the work your child brings home and work on areas that may need improvement.

Kindergarten is a year filled with amazing growth as our youngest children become real students! We are thrilled to witness this amazing transformation and we look forward to the adventures we will share with your child!
