Welcome to First Grade

First grade will be an exciting and challenging year. Language Arts is a large part of the first grade year. First grade students will be learning to read fiction and nonfiction books as well as poetry. Students will be working on comprehension and reading fluency. Students will be learning to write descriptive as well as narrative stories. What great authors we will have by the end of the year.
 
Students will be learning many new things during math this year. They will learn to add and subtract. They will use these addition and subtraction skills to solve word problems. The students love to learn how to tell time and measure things with nonstandard units. Students will also be working on patterning, sorting, and graphing. As a class, we will be counting to the 100th day of school. Along the way students will be working with place value, greater than and less than, and skip counting. The 100th day of school is a fun celebration for the kids.
 
We will be receiving two science kits this year. The first one will be our butterfly unit. Each student will receive a caterpillar. Students will observe that caterpillar as it become a butterfly. They will learn about the parts of a caterpillar and a butterfly. Students will learn all about the life cycle of a butterfly. We will also receive a soils kit. With this kit students will observe and compare different types of soils.
 
In social studies this year students will be learning about patriotism. Students will learn about historical figures and national landmarks. Students will also be learning map skills. Students will be reading maps with the cardinal directions. Students will be learning about holidays and customs that are celebrated in our nation and around the world.
