Welcome to third grade at Barrington Place Elementary! We have an exciting year planned! We will be learning by doing in science. The district provides our classes with a chemical kit to discover mystery powders. After that, we will receive a space kit. We will make several hands on items to better understand space. Finally, towards the end of the school year, we will enjoy working with a plant kit. Each student will get to plant their own seeds and watch the plant grow. We will be going to the computer lab to learn keyboarding. We must get a good understanding of the home row keys and even type 15 words per minute. We will learn how to make a Power Point and insert pictures into it. In social studies, we will journey through different communities and cultures around the world. In May, we will travel around the world by going to each classroom where each teacher teaches about a country including Japan, Mexico, Denmark, Australia, France, and more. In math, we will work on much more than just rote memorization of math facts. We will practice using problem solving strategies using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. We’ll learn how to show our work for each math problem. Our third grade concepts include place value, time, measurement, estimation, reasonableness and graphing. Our Language Arts program at Barrington Place Elementary includes opportunities to read a variety of materials including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, biographies, and more. Students will practice writing compositions using prompts given by the teacher. They will also write letters and record observations in science. We look forward to a rich year of success. Please contact your child’s classroom teacher with any questions or concerns.
