Welcome to 5th Grade

Welcome to the Fifth Grade Web Page!

This year in fifth grade, we have a 3-way split. Those teachers are: Eileen Bruns (Science), Christine Keller (ELA), and Nancy Schultz (Math). Each of the teachers will teach Social Studies to their homeroom class. Danielle Moss (ELA/Social Studies) and Terry Seymour (Math/Science) are partners again this year. Our bilingual teacher, Lisa Merino, will teach all subjects to her students.

Conference:
Our conference times are Monday through Wednesday and Friday from 8:15 – 9 AM. We are available to meet with you at that time or before/after school as daily schedules allow. Please send your request for a conference far enough in advance so that we can try to accommodate you. Please make an appointment before coming to school for a meeting. You may call the school at 281-634-4600, call the teacher and leave a message, e-mail the teacher, or send a note with your child.

Lunch:
Lunch is from 12-12:30. Parents are welcomed to eat with their child on Wednesdays and Fridays only. No other students may join.

Recess:
In preparation for middle school, there is no daily recess. Monday through Thursday from 12:30-12:45, students attend Social Walk which is a time to walk around and socialize in the bus circle. Students will receive recess on Fridays from 2:25-2:45.

Dismissal:
Students line up for afternoon dismissal at 2:55 and are at their designated dismissal areas at 3:00. Please try not to take your child out of class, as all of our classroom time is very valuable!

Homework:
Homework assignments are left up to individual teachers. When homework is not brought back the next day it costs the student a "behavior circle". We do not let children call home for forgotten homework. Our homework philosophy is to not only review skills but to teach responsibility.

Failing Grades:
Students with failing grades on assignments will be required to have the assignment signed by the parent. The student should also correct the errors.

Tuesday Folders:
These folders go home every Tuesday and should be signed and returned each Wednesday. The folders contain graded work from the week as well as a behavior chart. Behavior rules are listed in the folder. Any behaviors that stop a teacher from teaching or stop other students from learning will not be tolerated. We expect the very best from FES students and know that they can deliver!

You can help your child do better in school by doing the following:
- Encourage your child to read and play games that require thinking skills or physical exercise rather than doing mindless activities in their spare time.
- Look over their homework and show them that you are interested in their schoolwork.

We appreciate all that you do as parents and could not be successful in the classroom without your support at home. Thank you for sharing your children with us!
