Welcome to 1st Grade

Welcome to the First Grade web page.

The first grade teachers at Arizona Fleming are dedicated to advancing the children in academics, work habits and social skills. All children will be trained in developing comprehension skills as their reading fluency improves. In first grade, we have seven regular education classrooms and two bilingual classrooms. We have eleven first grade teachers who strive daily to allow their students to: “Reach for the Stars!”

We have four major content areas of instruction, Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science. The following are brief summarizations of each area of content or focus in first grade:

In Language Arts, students spend their time developing print concepts, phonemic awareness, letters and sound correspondences. First graders participate in read-alouds, shared, guided, independent, and interactive reading and writing.

In Math, students will use whole numbers to describe and compare quantities. We will write and solve addition and subtraction problems. We will introduce and reinforce patterns, graphing, sorting, money concepts and measurement.

In Social Studies, students will demonstrate an understanding of history, customs, community symbols, maps, charts, and the value of work.

In Science, students will exhibit an understanding of organisms, scientific processes, and the use of tools to acquire data. Many of these concepts will be met through two science kits that is worked with district wide: the soils kit and the butterfly kit.

Additional Information:
The focus of the Bilingual Program is on teaching concepts in the native language of the child while assisting the child in acquiring English. As the student moves up through the grades and builds English language skills, instruction in the native language decreases and English language instruction increases. Our program requires a strong focus on Spanish instruction in Reading/Language Arts through the second grade. The students acquire literacy skills which they then transfer to English literacy as they move through the program. As a result the child completes the program with strong literacy skills in both languages.

Thank you for visiting our web page. Please read with your child every night. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s teacher. We appreciate your continued support at home, it really makes a BIG difference!
