The role of the Reading Specialist in Fort Bend ISD is to promote literacy opportunities for students, teachers, and parents in a way that emphasizes appropriate instruction, which targets students who have difficulty reading, writing, and spelling, especially 504 dyslexic students, so that all students will be successful life-long learners.
 
My name is Barbara Plava, Reading Specialist, at Arizona Fleming Elementary. This is my 27th year of teaching, with 20 of those years in Fort Bend ISD. I have a Masters and Bachelor of Arts degrees in elementary and secondary education, along with an ESL endorsement. I have previously taught third, fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth grades before becoming a Reading Specialist six years ago. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. My hobbies are reading, antique shopping, playing golf and traveling.
