Arizona Fleming (1884-1976) was born and reared in Richmond, Texas. She was a successful African-American business woman who was respected by the community. In the 1950s Willie Melton and Arizona Fleming joined financial resources to file suit against voting discrimination taking place in Fort Bend County. Only white citizens were given the opportunity to nominate and vote in Democratic primaries. Fort Bend Independent School District honors this courageous lady by naming our school after her.
