Campus Student Support Teams (CSST)
CSST’s are building-level, student-centered problem solving teams, comprised of administrators, teachers, counselors, nurses, diagnosticians, school psychologists, and social workers. Parents may be involved as team members as well. The CSST tries to look at all the information available from all those involved, conceptualize the reason(s) for the problem, brainstorm possible solutions, and empower the teachers, parents, and others to help the student be more successful.
CSST’s try to intervene earlier in the development of a problem, rather than the traditional approach of refer-test-place. The goals are to make students successful in the regular education classroom to the greatest extent possible, and to support teachers in their efforts to educate all students.
Many times each adult involved with a student will bring distinct bits of information and different conceptualizations of the problem to the meeting. Together the team defines the problem and generates solutions in more effective ways than one person could accomplish on his/her own.
